I still can't believe the condition my YB5 is in, for a 30 year old bike it is remarkable, just a few things let it down so it's time to fix them.

We'll start with the wheels, although the bike looks stunning, if you look closely at the wheel centres, they have seen better days...

So it's time to start this job..

I can't believe how nice it is under here..

Removing the tyres down at the shop, you can see the oxidisation..

With all the hardware removed and under strong light, the oxidisation is BAD..

Front wheel rubbed back, time to start on the rear..

A friend works with Magnesium, so he had some primer, all done, time to start rubbing back..

So about 40 minutes of wet and dry get me to this stage... i rubbed through on a couple of edges!

The fun part next.......

Looking good....am a little surprised that youre painting the "mating" surface face of the wheels where the discs bolt to....front and rear....normally these are machined surfaces left unpainted to get the discs truly flat on the faces of the hubs....so they don't warp or wander.....and to stop heat being transmitted that could melt the painted surface......Perhaps not quite so critical with full floating rattly brembo Cast iron discs....but be sure to check the discs aren't binding on the pads when you fit the front wheel...be sure its lifted clear with a paddock stand and give it a few rotations and pull the brakes to centre the discs/calipers/wheel...and recheck free rotation before torqueing everything up....you may need to shim up the calipers to allow for the paint thickness applied to the faces of the wheels where they mate with the disc faces....

Hi 2Bims,

i'll see how we go, there was a finish applied to the mating surface from the factory, i forget what it's called, it's basically a process applied to magneium in motorsport applications... I'm more concerned with the rotors being perpendicular to the axle, i'll check for any run out once installed... It'll never go fast enough now to worry about heat transfer from the rotors... i'm too old for that stuff now, plus i have the SB6 if i feel a bit plucky.. Smile

Well, after a 3 week wait, my wheel centres have been returned all clean and shiny.

Choosing the colour was one of the most difficult aspects of the job. When i bought the bike, it was the wheels that set it apart from all other YB5's i had seen, the polished alloy rims really lifted the look of the bike compared to the all painted black versions. I didn't want black centres as the contrast would be too great, so it was a fine metallic grey, do you know how many metallic greys there are!!!

Here is the newly painted centre sitting in the rim... I'm very happy with the outcome.

I spent way to long bolting the rims to the centres, i must be a little OCD when it comes to my Bimotas, i carefully lined up all the bolt heads so they were all parallel to the rim.... then it was onto preparing the centres for disc mounting, out with the tap to clean all the threads of old loctite and paint..

Once that was all done it was time to fit the torx head titanium rotor bolts Smile

Rear wheel coming together with new bearings installed..

Rear wheel finished, well except for tyres...

The wheels are now down at the tyre shop waiting for the new rubber to arrive, i asked about options for wheel balancing as i didn't want to have the horrible sticky wheel weights as it took me hours to remove the adhesive from the rim. They recommended Dyna Beads, a spherical glass bead that sits inside the tyre carcass and balances the wheel due to centrifugal force, i hope they work. I've also asked for alloy right angle tyre valves, to make checking pressures easier, can't wait for friday Smile

Very nice detail Steve Cool I'm glad the anodising on your disc centres was in good condition. They look good as original.

Picked the wheels up from the tyre place today, spanking new dunlops fitted, the tyre shop sold me on using dyna beads to balance the wheels, these are glass beads that sit inside the tyre and disperse due to centrifugal force to balance the wheel, no ugly adhesive weights and nice right angle valves fitted too.

Now i just need to find time to fit them.

Very nice job on the wheels Steve! I'm sure you'll be happy with the Dyna Beads. I use them in my VTX1800. No need to worry about the tyres going out of balance when they wear as the ceramic beads remain 'fluid' and keep the wheels in constant balance. Ive had much more even wear since using them.

The only thing that worries me about them is that most bike shops don't know anything about them and I worry about them putting too much tyre lube on the bead of the tyre when they fit the tyres. I worry about the dyna beads clumping together if there was tyre lube or too much moisture in the tyre

Rear wheel finally on Smile

I spent about an hour last night pulling the rear axle apart and thoroughly cleaning everything. This morning i ducked out to buy some grease, i bought lithium based marine grease suitable for wheel bearings and general lubrication.

The new titanium caliper bolts are fitted, but now the caliper looks like crap, so that will be the next thing to sort out, the heim joint on the bracket has seen better days, so i'll need to find one of those...

The chain is covered in 30 years of built up lube, it will probably be robbing me of 30HP, once it is on the road, i'll see what a good ride does, maybe some heat will solve some issues, but i think it is going to need a thorough clean, then a good look at the o-rings, i'm tipping it will probable need replacing... does it ever stop...

Thanks to Steve, i discovered the front axle is much bigger than the standard Yamaha FJ1200 axle, so i now need to figure out how to fix the drive plate for the speedo drive, luckily the speedo drive is in excellent nick, so i just need to fix the drive and give it a coat of paint, then i can get the front wheel back on....

I was having quite a chuckle about your comment "does it ever stop...." because you well know as we all do that the answer is no. I'm doing a CB900F2, hailwood Replica and a Z1300 at the moment (the Hailwood tried to immolate itself so was unplanned resto) and every time I think that'll look ok I come back to it 5 minues later thinking that looks crap and so on it goes. And you know if you don't fix it it's the one thing that'll always get your attention even if you can't see if except for lying on your back in a pit with the bike suspended from the ceiling!!!
