Hello All,
hopefully someone can help me here, I bought a basket case YB9, overall looks in very good condition. It was someones project that just got left.
It originally came from Belgium ( I think ) any way all the paper work is in a language I do not understand but I will find out.
It has no NOVA but I am hoping that because it came from the EU I will avoid the dreaded VAT, no big deal if I don't though.
Can anyone advise on what I would have to do to get it registered at DVLA please.
Thank you in advance

Andy

Nine looks at the thread an no welcomes? Well, welcome to the forum Andy, I'm on the other side of the pond so i'm no more useful to you than a fart in a spacesuit. I'm sure one of your countrymen will come along soon with some answers though.

Hi Andy....and as said...welcome to the Forum....Happy to chat you through the process if you like....I've done 7 or 8 imports from EU...and swerved the dreaded VAT each time on NOVA......If its been previously road reg'd in the EU at some time it would be assumed that VAT has been paid in an EU member state...so completion of a NOVA would end with no tax to pay.....this has to be done first...DVLA are linked to the NOVA and wont register a vehicle until its done....NOVA rules are if its done over 6000kms and over 10 years old from recollection its assumed to being regd at some time on the road...and no tax to pay...you have to sign up to the govt gateway and do it online...theres fines for every day its not done after the first month that its been imported...so be careful on dates....Then its insure on the frame number for 30 days cover note....then its merely an MOT...as its over 10 years old it can be MOT's with Kms clocks and a headlight tape cover for any headlight kick up (bikes less than ten years old HAVE to be in miles and have a proper UK headlight)...then you can apply for a V5 and first years reg and tax....Be sure to write down info you are reporting on online Nova as the online bit doesn't allow you to go back or print off the info you gave...and it needs to match when you do the V5 and MOT...so...first things first...the Nova....there are guides available to read from HMRC and DVLA...all available on line...or pm your phone number if you need help

Guidance notes here:-

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/vat-information-sheet-0613-notification-of-vehicle-arrivals/vat-information-sheet-0613-notification-of-vehicle-arrivals

Says its a New means of Transport (tax Due)....IF....less than 6 months has expired between its first putting into use within EU...AND less than 6,000kms travelled...so...NO TAX if its over 6 months old AND over 6,000kms on the clocks.....evidently if you have proof of previous reg'n in EU then also no tax due....i.e. Belguim V5...

Hi Andy,
Welcome along. Always good to see another old bimota get the tlc it deserves and especially a YB9, a far superior model to the rest in my very biased opinion....... and if yours happens to have Marchesini wheels as opposed to the Anteras it came with, I'll swop you so you can get it back to it'soriginal dry weight for the mot.
No? Worth a shot.....

Hi Andy.

Welcome to the forum.

As 2bims mentions the NOVA is very important.
You may not have to pay VAT as its been register somewhere in EU but the Nova has to be done within 28 days of import . It used to be the VAT decision was done at registration, but then HMRC worked out that lots of people import and never register !!
There was an amnesty period for all historic imports to be registered on Nova , that passed years ago !!!! The fine is directed against the person that declares to NOVA not the person that imported years ago and did not put it on Nova .
You could be liable for £7 per day for X years if you not careful .

Sorry to be the one to dampen things , but you need to know.

As Vort says...be weary.....hence reason for offering to discuss if required.....Be sure you have a "receipt" for the bike from the previous owner stating when you bought it and how much you paid....VAT is due on price paid if not previously reg'd in an EU member state......hope you get the jist of what I'm trying to announce....Was this the Yellow YB9 on ebay a few months ago...that was intact when bought...but the owner then stripped but didn't put back together before selling???

I can work with foreign documents and extract the info you need if necessary...I've done Dutch, German and Italian papers and am fluent in Spanish and French...so pretty much the whole of the EU covered there barring Nordic countries....

you have to be weary when filing the Nova notice....they don't allow you to change details...pages are gone thru one at a time with no back reading or amendments.....and its timed or you get logged out....so read up or educate first...

Things to note are that DVLA and HMRC wont have a record of when it was brought into the UK...vaan loads of stuff comes over with no plates or docs...and customs folk don't register or record whats come thru or when...and they don't have the ability to reference V5 details of other countries...Most EU vehicles if imported HAVE to be deregistered in the member state before being able to be exported...even within the EU...Theres been such a transfer of vehicles that the lies of GErmany and Italy now charge a largeish fee to deregister a bike...and confirm that no taxes or fines or claims are due on the vehicle...but again...DVLA and HMRS don't have access to their systems...an export document should have accompanied the vehicle...

Doesn't always follow like that...I bought a Bimota from Italy...registered over there...but wasn't deregistered when shipped...and the owner gave me a copy of B&W UK V5 with the bike...I took this to the DVLA and they confirmed that the vehicle had never been deregistered in the UK or marked for export back to its home country...thus I merely applied for a New V5 and it retained its original UK age related plate from back in 1986...this is rare though...

Hi Andy and welcome to the forum!

2bims and Vort have it all explained. As they said, do your reading and get ready before going online.

I cannot fathom why this is such a laborious process over there. Some states are getting difficult to register vehicles (California is one) but nothing like the guys are describing. Must be the government wanting more $$$ as I can't see it adding to the "safety" unless you have loads of people driving whatever they want without regard. Rolling Eyes

Regsitration is quite simple...and you can pretty much register anything with the right test...2-strokes they don't test the emissions on as it F's up their emission diagnostic machine to the tune of 1,000's....so they simply write "pass"...

The Nova system came about as any new cars or other vehicles that came into the UK only had Tax paid on them when they were registered and sold....many cars were languishing in fields for years before being sold....so the Govt came up with a quick cash input...all cars to be Notified upon arrival into the UK and Tax paid within 30 days...it caught the backlash of all "new" cars already here for years that hadn't been reg'd...so a massive forward cash injection into the UK coffers.....for 2nd hand stuff it shouldn't matter...but they wrote that stuff in also..........

Hi All,
sorry about the long overdue reply but I have been trying to get my house in order. 30 bikes all taking my time ( trying to get down to about 6 to keep, too many bikes and not enough riding time ) and a house to build,100 sheep to look after etc etc.
Any way in answer to one of the questions, yes it was the one on ebay, stripped and left in pieces. Nearly all back together now so I should be firing up in a week or two, once running I will get it down for an MOT and insure it and then go through the hell of DVLA. Fingers crossed.
2Bims, I hope you do not mind me calling on you for some help, I also have a Benelli 750sei which I bought from Spain, its all in Spanish and I never applied for a NOVA number ( only 6 years ago, £7.00 a day = ouch ) I do however have a frame and V5C for 750 SEI - have I just answered my next question.

Welcome.....do not worry TOO MUCH about the NOVA...they did away with the fine per day last tear.
Also ...if the folk bringing it in did not declare it, on entry ...who can tell when it came in.

Best get it done before B day though...after March 29 who knows what will happen.

Welome to Bimota...a minefield of lack of spares, factory and what not!

regards
Gavin
