hello, I'm a new owner of a bimota sb6 first series, a great bike that accompanies a ducati 998 and an mv agusta f4 750.
Now I have problems with the alternator, I have read that there is a piece that when it breaks does not transmit the rotation of the engine to the alternator, is what happens to me, in my bike this piece is already modified with an aluminum ring, I have seen in some post that makes this modification, but still not transmit the rotation.
I don't see how I can remove this piece to see why it doesn't turn or replace it with ref 22740-46E02.
I would be grateful for any help, but I don't want to have to take the engine out..... Confused

big thanks

my bimota sb6 is the one from this video known to everyone: https://youtu.be/ICDyQE5bML0

You need to lower the engine, by pivotting it on the front engine bolts and then you can get the long screws which hold the starter clutch cover out. You then lift the starter clutch assembly out of its housing and remove the coupler from the end of the shaft with a bearing puller. You will need a hydraulic press to put the new bearing and coupler on.

Good luck!

it's also recommended that the rubber flap covering the alternator be removed and left off as it has a tendancy to overheat the alternator.

many thanks Very Happy .

the rubber cover was no longer

In a suzuki gsxr forum i have seen that they make a modification replacing the rubber with an aluminum or other soft metal cap, mine has this modification but now it is not effective, someone has made this modification?

No I haven't heard of that one. I've just left mine uncovered. My SB6 doesn't get ridden in bad conditions very often

Bimota didnt do anything to tbe SB6 engine, the coupler, alternator and bearings etc should all be standard.
That looks like the remains of the coupler Part 35 / 36 on this page https://www.cmsnl.com/suzuki-gsxr1100w-1994-r-e01-e02-e04-e15-e17-18-21-22-24-25-34-39-53_model13598/partslist/FIG-23.html

Replace it with new Suzuki parts

This modification is being made by the owners of suzuki gsxr1100w due to the continuous breakage of the piece, it is not a bimota or suzuki modification.
And it looks like it's a modification that works.

I think Suzuki started with a solid metal part, but when it failed it led to catastrophic damage to the motor. Which is why they went to a hard rubber bush, that will fail if abused. By abuse, we mean trying to start it with an undercharged battery. I replaced a coupler some years ago and with a lithium battery have not had a problem since.

I don't see the relationship between starting the engine with low battery and alternator coupler failure, the alternator can be blocked due to power demand?
In the case of this modification the bushing is glued with a sealant so it will also break if there is a problem, maybe it is my case.

I guess the metal coupler broke up and dropped metallic bits in the motor, as opposed to relatively harmless rubber bits.

As I understand it:
The starter motor and alternator share the same shaft so when you crank the motor you crank the alternator, which in time breaks the rubber coupler which. Suzuki revised the bearing but it's a remove and replace operation. Look at the Suzuki Workshop Manual part Engine 3-48. If you don't have the tools or you're unsure then take it to a workshop.

ok, first I will try to fix the coupling again if it doesn't work i will replace the coupling with the new suzuki reference.
I have the suzuki and bimota workshop manual as well as tools to be able to do the repair
many thanks

I had the same problem. Managed to change the Cush drive without takin out the engine. Was quick but a lot quicker than dropping the engine.
