Hi all, I did a post few weeks back about the handling of my DB9. I have an 8SP that I use for serious scratching, but wanted something more user-friendly for around town, that wasn't as demanding as the DB10. I went for the 9 as in theory it should have been near as good as the 8 in the handling & stopping department. In short it was an utter pig. Under hard braking it would lock the front, it was scary in corners than required high-speed dampening, I lost count of the number of times it tried to kill me in the twilght zone. After searching the forums it seemed I wasn't alone, which references to fitting Matris cartridges or replacing the Marzocchi with Ohlin's.

I found it hard to image that Marzocchi could get a product so wrong, but in their defence, the first owner sent this bike to a suspension 'specialist', and I don't know why or what was done, but it had 9.2kg springs, 5wt oil, and 142 air-gap with spings out BUT, spacer in! I believe this was one of the biggest cock-ups, as that sort of gap with spacer in is way too big IMO.

Anyway, I've prepared a google images album for anyone having similar issues, with text and notes to each pic. Even after the first ride, I am seriously back in love with this bike. I also got rid of the upper side bodywork, so there's reference pics to fitting new blinkers. Link below. Cheers Moz

Raidermoto

Glad you blew the lid on the handling of the DB9

Bimota released this thing and left all the development work to the owners.

Crazy, that you have to spend so much on a bike ....only to spend another shed load on making it work

Regards

Gavin

Mick....I do not want to hijack this thread.

Those of us with DB9 need all the help we can get!

As for mine it has been a 3 year evolution trying to get it what it should be.

I will post my images separately once the Dyno runs @nd tweaking have been done

Regards

Gavin

I find it quite hard to understand how shit the suspensions and forks are on the db9 when I’m reading you guys, i mean come on, in the hands of a professional the marzocchi and the extreme tech shock can’t be THAT bad for a road use... it is ??

Arsenic.............I have no idea where got the idea that I am a professional!

Every Suspension tech I took the Marzocchi RAC 50 and Extreme to....gave up....here is the list

2 x Ohlins tech centres, K Tech, BM Suspension Belguim (extreme shock dealer and service centre)
eventually Andretti and Matris got involved but only on the basis that they had an alternative products.

I have a Suspension service centre (1 mile from home and not open to public only race teams) which preps the British Champion motocrossers bikes
and they stated that the damping and stroke range only worked for less than a third of the travel....everywhere else it was shot and a bad compromise....but a nice colour!

BTW they rated the Matris stuff...better than any stuff they had seen in a long time

regards

Gavin

Wow...
So the Matris is THE part you buy first for the bike once you have it... what about the extreme-tech shock ? It’s THAT shitty or you buy a wilbers to replace it ? (Do a ohlins shock exist for the db9 anyway ?)

Arsenic and anyone else,

Buy the Ohlins from the Honda cbr1000 rr blade....2011 model
The linkage ratio is almost rxactly the same as the db9.
if you put them next to each other the similarity between the Honda prolink and Bimota DB9 would keep a lawyer happy

Hope this helps

Gavin

What about a Wilbers or a matris ? I have one on my db8, and i’m quite satisfied with it...
But yeah, ohlins is the top of the pop.

https://pitlanemotorsport.com/shop/fr/bimota/9575-bimota-db9-brivido-mono-amortisseur-matris-serie-m46r.html

Looks great to me... matris rear shock + steering damper + front suspensions, all the items in the hands on a professional should give great results... a bit pricey tho 1350€ + 460€ + 1150€... more than 3000€ for suspensions on a bike who isn’t cheap at all... ouch Very Happy

If i had one, i’d probably invest on the suspensions + a mwr air filter + Motocorse exhaust + a diavel/1198 whole injection system and electronic system... so around 8-10k€ more ... double ouch...

I guess that explains Tony the Paints offer to Richtea.

He has witnessed it all....first hand

Get your DB9 suspension correct and fall in love (after you have sorted out the fueling)

regards

As you tell, I don't get to check in to the forum too often, but for some strange reason I've also stopped receiving emails letting me know someone's contributed to a post.

Anyway, in reply to your query Arsenic, I can't query on the oem set-up of the DB9 for as you'll read in my opening post, the first owner had one of those 'professionals' modify the Marzocchi forks to make the bike more 'comfortable'. Christ only knows what that's supposed to mean, but if you follow the link you can see what this 'professional' had done, basically turned it into a pig for anyone who tried to ride it hard. IMO you're probably right about the stock suspension being good enough for the majority of owners or road use riding styles, but for those that buy an expensive bike for it's superior handling, then you get awfully pissed when it doesn't meet expectation. My 8SP is a one owner and to date I haven't had a need for anything outside of it's adjustment perimeters, but for the past year I've been riding the 9 because the suspension mods transformed the bike so much that it holds its own against every fulblown sports bike I've had to deal with, including a Duc V4S, well up until you get out of the twisty stuff, then the V4 disappears like the millennium falcon in hyperdrive!!
