Yep it’s from Centrepoint Wholesale.... I have no doubt that they mixed up some of the many many parts bags with the many many partly stripped bikes shoved at the back of the warehouse covered in dust waiting to be put back together in some form. It was exciting and quite distressing looking around thier warehouse Shocked

Some more photos of the DB4. I haven’t cleaned anything since I got it. Much cleaner than my other DB4, even the paint on the fork lowers is in nice condition and no stone chips anywhere. This one has the little Paioli disc missing from the bottom of the LH fork leg as does my my other DB4. They both have the Paioli disc on the RH fork leg

One thing that is a bit odd is that the rear Paioli shock doesn’t have the remote reservoir. It looks like exactly the same shock as the one on my other DB4 (except for the yellow spring) but just no remote res. I was assuming that the incorrect shock was fitted to this bike when Centrepoint Wholesale put the bits together, but they were convinced that it was the shock that came with this bike.

Does anyone know of any other Bimotas that came with this shock without the remote reservoir?

This is the shock in my other DB4, the spring weight was changed by a previous owner, hence the red spring rather than the white original.

Might be worth undoing the upper shock mount and rolling it over so you can see the part number (The Paioli sticker and non visible part number suggest it's upside down compared to your other DB4). I'd bet there's a plug in there. Did Mantras have a remote resrvoir?

Yep there's a plug in the other side. I wonder if they removed the reservoir for import rules or something? I bought an Ohlins shock with remote reservoir from USA a couple years ago on eBay, it was confiscated by customs and I never received it. No reason was given. I got my money refunded though. Some time later, I bought an Ohlins shock with remote res privately from the states and got it ok in the mail

Must only be the pressurized gas or something.

I don't really know and am only guessing, I never got a straight answer from eBay or the seller as to why the Ohlins was confiscated. At the time, I thought it was confiscated in USA, so not really sure what went on there. I don't think it reach our shores though

It's not customs, it's the dickheads at Pitney Bowes (The Ebay shipping scheme). If it's a private seller, and shipped via USPS, there's a very good chance that the shipping safety Nazis will let it through, especially if marked "Motorcycle parts" and not suspension parts.
Given the history of the parts bikes at that joint, I bet it's a DB3, non remote reservoir shock. Plug is for fill/presurisation. Some of the bikes are Zero mileage, they were canabalized for spares by the importer in Japan (a parallel importer- not the guys who run Corse), and hence have been cobbled together out of odd bits/been raided for better variants.

Period DB3 review photos show no remote res.

Ahh awesome, thanks for the info Ben, that answers a few questions that I've had.

I have a curious mind and therefore have many questions about the history of this bike. All that I know about it so far is that it was a Japanese delivered bike that was imported into Australia partly stripped and therefore imported as parts. From what I understand the major components were left together and then the rest was put back together in Brisbane. Obviously it has some incorrect and missing parts.

Gammaboy has touched on it in his reply above, but if anyone else has any info that may be of use it would be much appreciated. I'm guessing nobody here would know the actual bike (frame #0088) as there's not many Japanese members.

It's not a zero klm bike as it does have minor wear on the rotors, but from what I can tell, it may be very close. It has what I would guess to be the original factory fitted tyres dated 1997.

I'm just curious is all Rolling Eyes

I’m now leaning towards the idea of building this DB4 into a track bike. It won’t happen anytime soon but I’ll be on the look out for the rest of the parts that I need to make it race ready.

For bodywork, I’d like to go with something like the half fairing that Bimota did....

Looking for suggestions on what might be similar and fairly easy to fit. Obviously needs to be readily available in race glass.

I’ll most likely go with one of these replica seat units as it’ll be the easiest way to go using the original DB4 tank.

This is a BB1 race upper that’s available. I wonder how it would fit the DB4? Thinking it may be ok if I cut it along the line I drew on.

Suggestions?

That image you put up could almost be your bike from centrepoint with a previous sale of a stripped DB4.....I spot Magnesium Engine casings.....Hand made further back footpeg hangers and different non-stock footpegs and brake lever....changed rear shock with remote...changed wheels....etc etc...clearly track mode yet still with indicators, mirrors and rear foot peg hangers for a pillion
