I'm guessing that if I ground off the plate I would find the same stamping on this one as on the stock pipe. I don't know why anyone would go to the trouble of making the plate and welding it on, unless the modification was done at the factory? |
So they don't have to get type approval for a bike with these on I guess. |
Sorry, I don't know what that means |
Youre not the only one.....The opposite I've seen...where someone has put very neat plates onto a Zard Squishy carbon can end system on a Db5...with no baffles...but then had beautiful alloy plates made up....in black...with the E13 words and Db levels and specs written into it...just like "the real thing" to be able to get his bike reg'd and help with being pulled over...as the plates are real wonderful, professional |

I have re-packed multiple exhausts with standard results. I use "rock wool" as per this note:
"Mineral Wool Insulation. ... Also known as rock wool or slag wool, this material is one of the oldest types of insulation composed of noncombustible fibers and can withstand heat in excess of 1,800 degrees F. Unlike fiberglass insulation, mineral wool does not melt when exposed to such high heat."
I also use a thinner rock wool "blanket" rather than "packing" it in the can. Wrap a thin (1-2 cm) blanket around the inner baffle and secure with either SS safety wire or SS tie wraps. I am only trying to minimize any minor resonance that might seem annoying yet limit the sound waves a bit.
Header wrap could work in a pinch however it would likely significantly quell some sound.
Let us know how it goes. |

Type approval???
Simply a bike exhaust has to limit the bikes noise to a certain db, if that cant be guaranteed the way around it is to put Not For Road Use on the cans.
Bimota used 100 bhp Suzuki engines in the SB6 when the limit was in. _________________ Don't read everything you believe |

Checked with a magnet, the stock SB6 cans have a full stainless (400 series is magnetic) layer under the alloy skin, no wonder they're so damn heavy |

These gutted mufflers are also very heavy.... I’ll weigh both sets and check the difference, I don’t think there will be a lot of difference even though they only have what’s in the photos, aluminium outer shell and the steel baffle in the middle. I’m guessing most of the weight is in the collector and pipes _________________ '99 DB4 #104, '96 SB6 #1165, '94 DB2 J #652, '99 DB4 #088, '08 VTX1800, '93 ZXR750R M1, '95 ZXR750, '95 ZXR750 Race Bike, '94 CBR400rr NC29 Race Bike, '94 CB250, '49 BSA C10 250, '61 BSA A10 650, '89 ZXR750, '91 Ducati 851 |

Thanks Stu. Is yours a genuine Bimota race system branded Lafranconi? _________________ '99 DB4 #104, '96 SB6 #1165, '94 DB2 J #652, '99 DB4 #088, '08 VTX1800, '93 ZXR750R M1, '95 ZXR750, '95 ZXR750 Race Bike, '94 CBR400rr NC29 Race Bike, '94 CB250, '49 BSA C10 250, '61 BSA A10 650, '89 ZXR750, '91 Ducati 851 |

I had a failed attempt at re-packing these mufflers. I bought some synthetic muffler packing off ebay which looked good in the description. I packed the mufflers and put them back together and into the bike. I started and ran the bike for a while and I could see fibres being blown out of the mufflers. I thought that it might stop after they had been through a heat cycle, but there still seemed to be some fibres blowing out.
I ended up stripping them again and found that parts of the packing had been completely blown out through the perforated pipe. t's possible that it's because they weren't packed tightly enough, but I suspect it was just shit packing.
I might have another attempt using the expanding packing that you suggested Evilchicken

Sometimes a layer of different material is laid down before the packing which stops the packing blowing away, particularly if the holes in the muffler are big.
You could try some steel flywire or maybe some fibreglass woven rovings.
I've never used the under-wrapping as my bikes with packed mufflers are two strokes, and the two stroke splooge soon keeps it all in place. |

Yeah I may have to do that, although the stuff that EC posted the link for says that you don’t require an under layer. I’ll look into it a bit more. I might have been better off just taking them to a muffler shop and paying them to do it for me _________________ '99 DB4 #104, '96 SB6 #1165, '94 DB2 J #652, '99 DB4 #088, '08 VTX1800, '93 ZXR750R M1, '95 ZXR750, '95 ZXR750 Race Bike, '94 CBR400rr NC29 Race Bike, '94 CB250, '49 BSA C10 250, '61 BSA A10 650, '89 ZXR750, '91 Ducati 851 |

I have used stainless steel fly wire myself before wrapping the muffler with the muffler wrap , its not as fine as the original gurse... it seems to work. Get as much wrap on as you can... this will stop it moving around. |
