Anyone with a YB11 out there who can tell me whether I need to drop the engine out to change the middle spark plugs, or is there a special plug spanner / tool to do it with?? cheers

no, easy, you need a right size socket and extension. I got a teng one off ebay
Teng M380042C Spark Plug Socket 3/8in Square Drive 18mm
not sure on the extension but you'll figure it out quicker than removing the motor!
