YES.........
it restricts a cooling airflow to the alternator and can cause premature failing of the alternator or the coupling through overheating |

Why do you only get a nano-second to post on this site?
I've replaced the coupler on a 6R - no rubber mat. Suzuki produced an up-rated part because the rubber in the coupler wasn't up to the job. I'd leave your mat in if it's going to keep crap out of your airbox. Don't know who started the idea that it overheats the coupler but I don't think there's any substance to it. _________________ What, Jonny's gone! |

The rubber mat doesn't affect the airbox. It covers the alternator, including the vents in the alternator case. |

I've experienced the same problem with posting, have to log in several times.
I wonder why Bimota never put the rubber mat on the 6R
Not necessarily the coupler (although it can't help) but defiantly the alternator. I too thought it was an urban myth a couple of years ago. I now know it is the cause of an early demise of one of my alternators due to lack of cooling air |

Is the air intake different on the 6R then ....
I'll have a look at the rubber when I take the airbox off next. I might just cut it around the alternator slots and see how that goes.

Yep, 6r is ram air from between the forks.....not a great success.
Defiantly get some cooling air to the alternator they can get quite warm at times |

Looks like I may have me an alternator or drive problem, battery keeps going
flat, even when a new one was fitted.Though it was due to me not using the Bim a lot and the alarm system draining it.
Having done other work,forks off-new seals,wheels off-new tyres,bodywork off
-oil/filter change, new spark plugs, etc. I wondered which would be easier, as a one man job- drop the engine or support the engine on a bike lift and lift the
frame off, any advice.
Same time, seem to have lost any ignition spark at plugs, tried all usual faults
change plugs, check ht leads, check connections.Looked through all documentation I could find. Checked side stand cut-out ,back to relay. All tests
ok.Anyone had similar fault.
Leaves me with the in gear switch, ignitor relay, pick up sensor, and dread of all
dread -CPU ignitor unit, cant seem to locate diode, any clue to its location. _________________ Marty

I always drop the engine.
Never tried to lift the bike off the engine but it does sound fun
as for no spark at the plugs...please tell me your not using iridium plugs and the battery(s) are fully charged
I presume you've got the wiring diagram(s).
You can get to the alternator drive by just swinging the engine forward on the front mountings |

It would just be the frame and the steering yolks left to lift. Wheels and
forks detach in about 30 mins, exhaust in about 20 mins.Which weighs
more frame and shock/swing arm or engine . Also with air box removed
it looks as though frame brace would clear carbs which, if so could be left in situ.
Plugs are standard not iridium. Have wiring diagram for both Bim and
gsxr1100.Only tests not done are in gear sensor- trying to locate connector in harness , diode - cant seem to find it , ignitor CPU unit - dont have test unit nor does local Suzuki dealer _________________ Marty

You can certainly take a look at the alternator coupler without dropping the motor, but if you need to change it you need to drop the motor 'cause when you pivot it forward on the head mountings you can't get all of the starter clutch cover bolts out. The coupler sits on the end of the starter clutch assembly. You need a bearing puller to take it off and ideally a hydraulic press to put the new one on. _________________ What, Jonny's gone! |

When I put the engine back in I lifted the frame without the wheels onto the engine, it's a lot easier than hauling the engine around.
I guess you'll need the engine to be on a stand [/code] _________________ Don't read everything you believe |
