As a kid I used to love dismantling things to see what was inside.

Not being a mechanic by trade, some tasks that my bikes require look daunting
hence they get done at some cost by a mechanic that knows how.

Went back into my childhood, spent £50 on an old 73 VF750 Honda that was
nearly complete but totally knackered and unrepairable, and spent 5 days
taking it apart, engine and all, right down to the last nut and bolt.

Found this very enjoyable (must be a perversion), learned me a bit about major
spannering. (now got a lovely box of nuts and bolts, and bits of alloy)

Just have to learn now how to put things back together again !!!!!

it's putting them together again that's the tricky bit, but if you like this sort of thing have a look for a mechanics course at a local college

Thought of that,but
Shocked not one in Scotland !
Not the kind of thing you can do by distant learning either.
So I will have to keep my subscription to Motorcycle Mechanics Sad

Buy the Haynes Motorcycle Maintenance TechBook

http://www.haynes.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10001&storeId=10001&productId=21903&langId=-1

It covers the all the course work - you can get it in Halfords too

Ifytou can read a manual then putting them back together is not that hard, afterall they are just a pile of parts that go together in a set way. Read the book twice with the bits infront of you and if it's not happening read it again, you've probably made a simple mistake.
The harder stuff is working out why a bike/engine/electrics has stopped working.
Remember, nobody was born with mechanical skills and experiance is something you gain 10 minutes after you really needed it.
