hadn't thought that far ahead but have looked into having carbon sleeves made already and on my first sb6 I cut most of the gubbins out of of the cans and welded a straight through, perforated, stainless pipe in...packed it and voilą...light weight cans. They worked well and not much noisier than the originals and with carbon sleeves instead of the heavy duty ally sleeves, aint going to get much lighter if I have a bespoke system made Wink

.....now.....I've thought that far ahead Laughing

Carbon mirrors with longer stems would be more commercial. You can put a plug in the mold and make ducati style ones, they'll sell to a much bigger market.

a tadge "off thread" from the heated debate of who said what and when...but my Db2 has Carbon Fibre mirrors, and no, not a wrap, and are considerably lighter than the standard plastic ones (not that it makes much difference with my "frame" when aboard. Laughing ) The small hole in the back is also there for a teeny allen key to enter and release the mirror from its swivel mount, although I've never bothered to do so (if it aint broke, dont fix it) Theres no "cast" Bimota logo on the body or numbers etc but there is a Bimota "b" logo in gold sticker to the inside left and right of the right and left mirrors. Hence some 19 years ago Bimota managed to make carbon mirrors, so should still be "doable" today....Seen them on the odd Sb7 also

Just my tuppeny worth. and then of course there would be all those Ducati 748/916/996/998 Nuts that would snap them up like hot fresh doughnuts on Blackpool pier....Hhhmmm Doughnuts...

I looked into the Exhaust sleeves for Oily. The sample one was used and had some dents so making a mould from that one would have been pointless. Making them in wet lay with a cheap mould would not be an option either. So the only real way is in Pre-preg in a high temp and high pressure mould with a pressurised bladder system. The cost would not be cheap either for the mould or the parts. Hybrid resins or Epoxy resins need to be used and then the pre-preg has to be able to take high temperatures and will need to be cured at over 120 degrees C for up to 9 hours so the cost of cooking them would be expensive too. For ones that would last the price would be over £200 for a small run and that does not allow for the cost of the mould being made..

Mirrors are OK but it is the adjustment mechanism which either needs machined alloy parts making that get bonded into the part or they are covers. Getting the arms and pivots made would not be too hard if you can buy 100 parts at a time from a machine shop OR if someone here has access to a machineshop and CAD to design it all up. Then machine a mould form from alloy with reference points and locations for the metal inserts to allow them to be adjusted ect... metal tooling for this type if thing is the best way to go.. It could then be made in either epoxy wet lay or pre-preg carbon.

The airbox base idea has been played with and I made a couple of test ones. I think re-making the mould with some hybrid tooling resin is an option as the shape although simple to look at is not so easy to lay dry carbon into so going down a pre-preg route using left over carbon from my other work may save some money but would still need to be cooked for 9 hours to get the best parts. Oily has still got to trim them up to get a finished size but as I have a test mould I can scribe that up and make a strong master from it then make the pre-preg mould. Price would not be bargain basement but with it being pre-preg the parts will be better than wet lay for avoiding air entrapment in the weave..

I admit I love the ideas for parts it is just with the low volume of sales and the high cost of tooling they will never be cheap without cutting corners... But the seat/tank cover idea is a good one as the ones with those fitted will be possibly the only ones outside of the odd one the factory may have sneaked out for their special customers... lol..

I dont have the machine shop, but I do train people in 3D CAD so have access to all the CAD and simulation toys..

The original cans look like they were spun, a bit of an artisan thing.
