Hi Nige, I could remember that I had seen this once before. I've read about it on a forum. After some research I found again. see photo.

In this case, not as heavily soiled as yours, it is caused by the modern fuel in a polyester fuel tank.
This person used “tank cure” to protect the inner part of the tank and cleaned the carbs with solvent/thinner.

Vince - that's the deposit in my carbs for sure.
Thanks for all the info and help - time to get the solvent out and give it all a good clean. Id just about run the tank dry before I had the problem but I think a liner in it is in order. Its got super fuel with additive in it this fill so hopefully it wont block up again. I'll update in due course. Smile

CT981 -yes mine has the high breather that is a pig to get the hose on top of due to the frame - cheers.
Vince and others Methanol is the solvent for the deposits - suggesting its the ethanol in the fuel that has dissolved deposits in the tank. I wonder which super unleaded has it in so I can avoid it! Carbs in pieces now and looking at the condition of the jets they have been removed a few times before me!!!! Thanks for all your help guys Smile

There is a thread on here...but defo avoid all Super unleaded petrols if from Asda, Tesco and the like...Shell also avoid...their 97 grade has ethanol...and its either Texaco or Total that also puts it in high grade.........BP is OK at 97 grade...smaller garages round your way heaven knows.....them cheapo yorkshire folk probably put it in all grades.......

WTF!!!
Well there was nothing in the tank when I got it!! Once I drained the tank - tap all gummed up - this started peeling from the inside revealing the fibreglass. I suspect that someone has tried a coating or liner in the past which new petrol has destroyed. It used to be brown inside - the brown in the carbs is the colouring/ sticky deposit out of this coating.
Time for a dose of ball bearings/ nuts and bolts and a good shake of the tank. Hmm I guess that will take a few hours to sort!

Looks like the top of your petcock filter has gone awol there also......Whats the tank made of on the KB1?

Some years ago I bought a second hand alloy tank for my historic race bike. First time I raced with the alloy tank fitted I had continual problems with blocked main jets. Considering the main jets were an 1/8" hole, as I was running on methanol, it was something fairly large blocking the jets.
It turned out the tank had been sealed along the bottom joins with a sealer that was not affected by petrol but turned into something resembling wet tissue paper when exposed to methanol.

If the tank had sealer in, then you might want to have it pressure tested before refitting.

Ducati Dave - yep that looks like it -it then goes crispy once it dries out. I'm sending the tank away for a proper job to clean and seal the insides. Hopefully that will cure it once and for all.

A bit odd really as KB1 tanks should be ali then covered in fibreglass.
as they get older if you shake them you can hear the small pieces that have broken off between the aluminium and the coating. Sounds a bit like a childs rattle.
may be it had a leak and somebody thought a sealant was a good idea.

It has an aluminium filler and tap spigot. I just thought these were bonded into the GRP. Its defo GRP as I can see through it when I hold it up to the light. Bimota probably ran out/ didn't pay the bill for the ally tanks so only did GRP - I wouldn't be surprised!

Well you have the shape for the tank with the old GRP...and you now know a company that makes nice ally tanks suitable for YB7's..........Think you know where this should end up...........Every thread and post everywhere I've seen says that regardless of GRP, fibreglass or carbon fibre or whatever lining used....new grades of petrols with additives eventually eat them..........
