Hi

DfT view on them:-

http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/roadsafety/drs/hidheadlamps

Quote:

Aftermarket HID (Xenon) headlamps
Fact sheet: Aftermarket HID headlamps
December 2006

In the Department's view it is not legal to sell or use after market HID lighting kits, for converting conventional Halogen headlamps to HID Xenon. If a customer wants to convert his vehicle to Xenon HID he must purchase completely new Xenon HID headlamps. The reason for this is that the existing lens and reflector are designed around a Halogen filament bulb, working to very precise tolerances. If one places a HID "burner" (bulb) in the headlamp, the beam pattern will not be correct, there will be glare in some places and not enough light in other places within the beam pattern.

The following is the legal rationale:

The Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations 1989 regulate the situation in the UK.
Under these Regulations, HID/Gas Discharge/Xenon headlamps are not mentioned and therefore they are not permitted according to the strict letter of the law.

However new vehicles have HID headlamps. This is because they comply to European type approval Regulations. The UK cannot refuse to register a vehicle with a European type approval. These are to ECE Regulation 98 (for the HID headlamps which are tested on a rig in a laboratory) and ECE Regulation 48 (Lighting Installation on the vehicle).

For the after market, a used vehicle cannot obtain type approval because it is only applicable for new vehicles. However we feel that saying "HID is banned in the after market" would not be reasonable. Instead we should make analogies with new vehicles. It would be reasonable to require HID in the after market to meet the same safety standards as on new vehicles. The same level of safety should apply.

Therefore a HID headlamp unit sold in the after market should:

1. be type approved to ECE Regulation 98 as a component.

2. when fitted to the vehicle should enable ECE Regulation 48 to be complied with (although no government inspection will take place).

3. Comply with RVLR as far as "use" is concerned.

In practice this means:

1. The headlamp unit (outer lens, reflector, bulb) shall be type approved to ECE 98 and be "e-marked" to demonstrate this. That can only be done by the headlamp supplier - Hella, Valeo etc. who must test the headlamp in an independent laboratory.

2. Once fitted to the vehicle it must have headlamp cleaning and self-levelling (which can be for the headlamp or can be in the vehicle suspension - some expensive estate cars have "self-levelling suspension" and that is adequate). Also the dipped beam must stay on with the main beam.

3. The headlamp must be maintained in good working order, kept clean, and aligned/adjusted correctly like any other headlamp.

Under the Road Traffic Act 1988 it is an offence to supply, fit or use vehicle parts which are not legal.

In summary it is not permitted to convert an existing halogen headlamp unit for use with HID bulbs. The entire headlamp unit must be replaced with one designed and approved for use with HID bulbs and it must be installed in accordance with the rules stated above.

The standard Bimota headlights on the SB6 aren't even Halogen. not that putting a Halogen bulb in them makes much difference there's still a big "hole" in the light right where you want to see.

Most lamps these days are a shaped unit and so don't fit into the Bim's standard round holes.

the standard lights are rubbish arn't they Laughing I think they come from a moped or a Cagiva trail bike.

Anyway I think there were two styles of lights one bigger one smaller. The mk2 onwards has standard lamps - I got a pair from a GSX-R and had them fitted to an ally plate. You need to fit relays or the wires slowly cook and break. An alternative to the alloy plate is to cut the original plastic item, lets face it your going to use them again

Which model GSXR did your headlights come from and do they fit the fairing ok?

The later oilcooled ... they came in a big heavy glasslens thing which I had to take a hammer to. The earlier ones had a side light though which could be useful.
I've got the old ones if you need to just pass an MOT but I wouldn't recomend trying to see anything with them.

The lamps on the SB6 are plastic

Mine are glass Wink

I'm just waiting for some aluminium plate to arrive and we'll put this one to bed.
one thing I do know already is the zxr 400 headlights are too small for the later SB6 but probably ok for the early, small headlight version Wink
Preliminary measurments show I'm probably going with gsxr 400 lights.
All will be revealed soon Laughing

Right.......
Here we go with my solution to the age old SB6 headlight problem.
I'm not particularly doing this because of the dim, candle like originals although that's going to be a bonus with halogen bulbs.
I'm primarily doing this because I've got a smashed light Wink
Firstly, which lights to use?

From left to right................

GSXR 400, FZR 400, SB6, ZXR 400.....
The nearest dimensions to the SB6 is the gsxr lights so I went with them.
The FZR lights were also a possibility but the lens profile is totally different and I want to keep it looking something like the original
As you can see the ZXR lights are much smaller and would probably be fine for the early, small headlight SB6.

First thing, mark out a piece of 4mm aluminium plate.......

Then rough it out. I used a jigsaw but I'm sure it wouldn't be a whole load better if I had it laser cut but it would have taken a whole lot longer Laughing

I then tided it up a bit with files and flap wheels before turning to the light units themselves. The GSXR lights come with three tabs on the back

which I removed with a dremmel.

Just a matter of tidying everything up and bonding the lights to the plate

Dimension wise, they are pretty close to the original SB6 lights so all in all a fruitful couple of hours and about £20 well spent. I wonder how much replacement Bimota headlights cost
Laughing
