Well its that time of year again where the motorcycling community heads to Las Vegas to oogle and bid on (and hopefully acquire) the bike of their dreams.
This year at Mecum's, there is only one BIMOTA on the block, and its not just any BIMOTA, but an SB2 from the MC Collection of Stockholm.
https://www.mecum.com/lots/LV0119-362415/1979-bimota-sb2/
Its not clear to me which serial number SB2 this is, as there are no pictures of the head stock or mention of the serial number in the online write up.
There are some pictures of the bike at the MC Museum in Stockholm on flicker as well.

It will be interesting to see what it goes for...generally Bimotas seem to fetch higher prices at auction than private sales.....theres 2 others for sale at the moment...one in USA....and one in the UK
UK bike - https://www.madeinitalymotorcycles.com/single-post/2018/11/07/Bimota-SB2-1977
Rather optimistic £40,000
Be careful NOT to look another bikes for sale...as he has a plentiful Boys toys garage full
And Nob of Bimota Spirit...but this one has the headlight and rear lights filled in AKA race style - $42,500 - so....both higher than the Auction Guide price

2bims, yes I am very familiar with the lads at Made In Italy, having acquired several bikes through them over the years. A very professional group.
Regarding the auction estimates, one must factor in the buyers premium (10% for this Mecum auction) into the total price paid (equivalent private party sale). So factoring that into the Mecum estimate, the range is $32-40k, which is right in line with the current going rate for restored SB2's (all original SB2's are valued higher).
I plan on being at the auction, so will report on the condition of the lot, and the result.
Cheers! _________________ 1978 Bimota SB2 00046

Hey Steve, I may be going to LV as well. Several of my friends have already booked rooms for the auction. Waiting on my wife to confirm whether the auction dates conflict with her schedule. Since you already have two SB2 you wouldn't mind if I will try to go for the one crossing the auction block?
Heres's a little something about the upcoming MC collection at LV:

Did you read the post at the bottom of the page? Caveat emptor applies especially at high volume auctions like Mecum. _________________ pkay

Hey Tirefriar, I probably don't need another SB2 (BTW - this one is from the second series) , but I would be happy to look it over with you, to highlight any potential issues or non-original bits or missing items.
You have to know more about what you are buying than the seller knows about what he is selling.
Even though it states that is was restored to "original condition", from the photographs there are some errors in the restoration:
1.) Front brake calipers should be black
2.) Fork legs should not be polished
3.) Front fender sides have been cut and replaced with metal fork brace
4.) Rear brake caliper should be black _________________ 1978 Bimota SB2 00046

Steve, thanks for the generous offer and is of course readily accepted. I am still in limbo - mainly waiting on my wife to confirm her schedule. I also checked out Bonhams and their selection is quite interesting.
Pkay, any transaction whether its dealer, private party or auction requires a careful and clear headed approach. This is no different. Simple rule is to trust but verify. _________________ 1991 Bimota YB10

The auction companies like Bonhams and others over here in the UK now describe both cars and motorbikes up for auction as "exhibits/collectibles"...and "as such there is no guarantee as to its road worthiness/registration or use as a means of transport".....and the few I've been to they dont give back-up to questions re vehicle status and no chance of pulling it apart or even seeing if it runs unless the owner is hanging around....probably the trickiest and most risky of all buys is at auction now |

The Mecum bidders "rules" are quite interesting to read, as well as the Bonham's "disclosures". Based on what they stipulate, I am sure there have been many issues in the past (prior litigation) that they want to avoid.
Regarding the Bonham's auction, they do have several interesting bikes for sale. What really surprised me was Bonham's buyers premium. Hope you are sitting down.....its 25%! So expect the price at the hammer to be significantly below market, because the price paid will be 25% more than the hammer price. _________________ 1978 Bimota SB2 00046

Well, no go on the auction for me but will have 2 mates going there. 25% premium is highway robbery. _________________ 1991 Bimota YB10

Steve, auctions are really the roll of the dice. Unless you know the vehicle and/or the owner you can never be sure 100%. Most auction houses don't do their due diligence on the items that cross their block, they mostly go off the description seller provides. The best practice is to identify items of interest before getting there then arrive early and go through your list. You may see and speak to the seller at that moment as well. In general, use of common sense is strongly recommended Thats the best due diligence you can perform given the circumstance. _________________ 1991 Bimota YB10
